Hickman Mills Cougar Nation
Long before there was a Cougar Nation,  or even a Cougar Territory, there was a Settlement known as Hickman’s Mill. Hickman’s Mill was located on the Three (Santa Fe, California and Oregon) Trails, in southern Jackson County, Missouri. As the Settlement was becoming a Township, Hickman’s Mill applied for a Federal Post Office. Washington, DC approved the application, but was documented as Hickman Mills. Hickman Mills had developed a public school system within their District. In 1902, Hickman Mills consolidated their School District, and since they were the first to do so in the state; it was made Number One. In 1961, Hickman Mills was annexed by Kansas City, but the District remained and continued to grow in number. In 1969, the District had about 15,000 Eagles including their younger followers. It was decided that Cougars would be the best choice to reduce the Eagle population and restore balance within the District. Since Cougars were not indigenous to this District, a number of Eagles, Leprechauns and Pioneers were destined to become Cougars, and by the Powers that be, it was so. The District divided into two Territories, and in the latter part of 1972, the first Cougars were sighted. On May 18th, 1974, the first Pride of Cougars, graduating as Senior Class and Grade, began a tradition. On May 15th, 2010, the last Pride of Cougars, graduating as Senior Class and Grade, ended a 37 year tradition, for now and the foreseeable. The 2010-2011 school year marked the return of the Eagles representing the District as the only Seniors, Juniors and Sophomores, and attending Ruskin High School. The Cougars represent the District as the only Freshmen and 8th Graders, and attend the Old Hickman Mills Senior High School after it became the New Hickman Mills Junior High School. Beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, HMSHS/JHS may become a Freshman Center. Both the Cougar Territory and the Eagle Territory have expanded to the full boundaries of the District. By 2014, the majority of Eagles will have been a Cougar before they graduate. The fact remains, it matters not whether you are a Cougar or an Eagle, if you graduated from this District, you graduated from Hickman Mills.

Cougar Nation 2010 The 1974-2010 Hickman Mills Senior High School Grads, Family and Friends Picnic, Tailgate, Tour, Meet and Greet, was an informal gathering of Fellowship and Goodwill, honoring our Alma Mater, on Saturday, July 24th, 2010, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, at Hickman Mills Senior High School. Over 400 responsible Cougars, respectful to themselves, others and their property, behaved with a “Do unto others” attitude, and dressed appropriately, were in attendance. Cougars from Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Illinois, Texas, Nevada, South Carolina and Alaska enjoyed themselves and had a good time responsibly. Some Cougars met and greeted their fellow Grads, Family and Friends and toured their air conditioned school. Some Cougars brought their lunch and picnicked on their school’s grounds or tailgated in their school’s parking lot, and disposed of their waste properly. Some Cougars might have brought their gear and played baseball, football and Frisbee in their school’s fields, although it didn’t rain, it sure was hot and humid. Some Cougars brought their camera, recorded their moments, and shared them. For those of you who wanted to attend but couldn’t...you were missed; for those of you who chose not to attend...you missed out. Thank you for your cooperation and your part in making this event totally safe and thoroughly enjoyable for everyone.
